Working Conditions Surveys

Comparative analysis of national/international surveys on working conditions and quality of working life

This research project is a comparative analysis of national/international surveys on working conditions and quality of working life conducted for the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions in Dublin.

The projects look at  three kinds of national, European or international surveys gathering data on working conditions:

Type 1:  Periodical surveys, focused on working conditions with a general scope.
Type 2:  Periodical surveys which, although not focused on working conditions, provide
relevant information about working conditions and quality of working life.
Type 3:  One-off or non-periodical surveys, focused on working conditions with a general
             scope.

Background
This analysis is an update of an international comparison of working conditions surveys by the Instituto Nacional de Seguridad e Higiene del Trabajo (INSHT), Spain for the European Foundation in 2001/02. The purpose was to create an inventory of national working conditions survey data sources. A report provides a synthesis of the first exploration.
Data sheets for each of the surveys provide detailed information.

Research in surveys on working conditions
The project has provided useful information from the point of view of survey methodology, questionnaire design and trends / results identified and has been a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers and social partners with a professional interest in working conditions. Currently, the fieldwork for the fourth European Foundation's European Working Conditions Survey takes place. Additionally, each country in the network of correspondents in the European Working Conditions Observatory provides a national survey data report. 34 national survey data reports have been published until today. Two EWCO survey data reports have been provided by the AWWW GmbH: Working and employment conditions in Germany and Quality in work and employment for the EU level.

The new study
The new study aims at both updating the data collection and extending the coverage to include further working conditions surveys of national/international scale and multi-secotoral in scope. In contrast to the first data collection, the new study includes periodical and non-periodical surveys.

Online questionnaire
To facilitate the data collection and analysis an online questionnaire has been developed by the AWWW GmbH.
